Trip Update 10/5/2015
---------------------------
I'm back from Haiti, my first of the two mission trips I'm taking that you have helped to fund. It was a great trip that was hard work and also an eye opener to many things we take for granted.
It was a struggle getting the things done that were scheduled for the trip. The delivery of solar panels, wiring and supplies was stuck in customs until mid week (can you say corruption) even through they were shipped months in advance. We had to scavenge wire in the meantime to begin rewiring projects that we had the first half of the week.
Existing wiring and power were sketchy at best and a lot of time was spent undoing or correcting pre-existing stuff.

All the Haitian people we met and worked with were amazing; kind and quick to help even when they had no idea how (communication struggles).

In the end we completed everything that we had planned for the trip including installing the first set of solar panels, setting up the 16 battery bank installing the combiner, Radian Inverter and breaker box, installing a couple hundred feet of electrical wire in electrical conduit and installing a DC freezer and refrigerator.

Electricity in this area of Haiti is spotty or non-existent and while at Jacob's Well (where we did the installation) they had to run the diesel generator just so that we could have power for things like the well pump, lights, and a fan at night. Diesel fuel is costly and the solar will cut the fuel cost by requiring a reduced amount of generator run time.

I've uploaded a few pictures from the trip if you are interested here:

I look forward to the next trip to the DR where we will be doing a much larger project at Freedom International's School (http://www.itisforfreedom.com/about-us/what-we-envision.html)

Trip Update 9/5/2015:
Due to a lack of funding by other members of the Honduras Team the missions trip to Honduras has been postponed till next year. However, I have been given the opportunity to join the Haiti missions trip early October as a novice. This is a shorter timeline for raising funds, but it is also a less expensive missions trip. If I raise the funds which would have been required for the Honduras trip, after training I would then also be able to participate with the Dominican Republic Trip early November.

Please help me to raise money to go on these missions trips with SonLight Power.

-----
While in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, I will be working with a team to install solar panels to provide a consistent source of power for communities that currently utilize fuel powered generators.

The money that I'm trying to raise will help to cover the costs of the missions trip, travel and training. All donations to Sonlight Power Missions are tax deductible and any amount that you could give to help, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to ask for your prayers, as this is my first missions trip and I don't fully know what to expect. Pray that God would use us to show his love to his people. Pray that this would be a life changing trip and that we make a lasting impact that would point back to Christ not just during this trip but for many years following. Also, please pray for protection as I embark on the unknown.

Thank you.

If you are new to SonLight Power, please read the quick summary below and/or take a look at videos of past trips:

SonLight Power makes an immediate and lasting impact for the poorest people in Central and South America as well as Africa. Most live in areas with no supply of affordable electricity which hinders the quality of their medical care, obstructs education for their children and simply makes everyday life even more challenging.
Using solar panel technology and volunteer work teams, SonLight Power connects orphanages, medical clinics, schools and churches to a 30 year supply of electricity. This sustainable power source releases children who work in the fields during the day to get an education in the evening after dark. It provides refrigeration to store medications at clinics in remote locations. SonLight Power systems power lighting so the orphanage cook can prepare breakfast for 100 children before sunrise or simply run a fan to create a refreshing breeze on a 110 degree day.
We have found that people who live off the electrical grid are not only poor monetarily, but are also poor in spirit. They have lost hope in their fellow man . . . and lost hope in God. These are some of the most spiritually dark places in the world. The work teams from SonLight Power bring them hope. Our presence in traveling to their location is a physical reminder that God loves them. The installation of the solar panel system gives SonLight Power team members the opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus's love as the reason that we are there.
SonLight Power's efforts are coordinated through established contacts inside each country that are already working with the local church. Our efforts bring the church valuable credibility with their community and enhance their opportunity to share the Good News.
SonLight Power delivers immediate, impactful and lasting change to the darkest places in Central and South America and Africa. It is our privilege to "take Light into darkness."
