A new face is joining the SonLight Power team – but she’s more than familiar with the mission and friends like you.

On May 1, Jenny Sasson began a new role at SonLight Power – Director of Mission Relations.

You might know Jenny as a long-time friend, advocate, and co-leader of SonLight Power teams in places like Honduras, Mexico, and Panama. She has been serving with the mission alongside her husband, Kevin, for more than 15 years.

As an experienced pastor, leader, and speaker who has played a part in some of SonLight Power’s most impactful moments, in her new role, Jenny will nurture relationships with SonLight Power supporters and partners like you to grow impact even further.

What makes Jenny such a great fit for this role? We sat down with her and asked her to share her story and what she hopes to accomplish with you in this new chapter with SonLight Power.

Where are you from? And what did you do before moving to Cincinnati?

I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. My whole family still lives there. I loved it there – from the weather to the food, my family and friends were and still are everything to me.

I never in a million years thought I was going to live in another country, learn another language, eat different foods, you know what I’m talking about. Skyline Chili was never in my plans. Haha!

But sometimes things don’t go as you predict or imagine, and you have to yield those plans to God's plan for your life.

Before moving to Cincinnati, I worked for 10 years as a radio/television producer and host for various TV networks, including Enlace TBN. I was given an opportunity to work at a TV station while studying music because my dream was to travel the world singing and sharing Jesus’s message.

Want to know a fun fact? I’m a drummer. Yes, that’s right. I taught for a little while and I played drums for a power metal Christian band back in the day, called Providence. I remember those being very fulfilling years.

What’s your faith story? How has church impacted your life?

Wow, all I can say is that Jesus changed my life at a young age. I grew up going to church every single week. But it wasn't until my early teen years that I had a personal and supernatural encounter with Jesus.

He found me in my ugliest moment, wrapped His arms around me, made me feel loved and accepted and promised never to leave me or forsake me. He gave me a hope for my future. In that very moment, I made a promise to live my life for Him, bringing others to His Light.  Jenny blog 5

Church has always been an important part of my life. I served in every area – from leading worship to serving in evangelism, discipleship, and children ministries – which would prepare me for when God would call me into full-time pastoral ministry years later. God definitely uses every part of our story. Nothing goes to waste for Him.

How did you and Kevin meet?

Oh well, I love sharing our love story. Please, get comfy, here I go…

I met Kev at the church in Tegucigalpa where I worked for four years before moving to Cincinnati. One Sunday in 2008, I was leading worship when Kev, who had left a career in the U.S. corporate world and was at that time living in Honduras, visited for the first time in search of his church home along with the family that hosted him.

Kev loved the church – and me…haha – and he decided to stay. Soon after exchanging looks, we were introduced to each other.

Did you know that we did not know each other's language when we started dating? We had friends and a big Spanish-English dictionary as helpers to facilitate our conversations. I can now say that all things are possible with Christ, love, and commitment.

I really liked Kev, he was the type of guy I had prayed and asked God for. Smart, adventurous, kind, generous, and athletic. He also played semi-pro baseball there, but that’s a story for another time.

Not long after meeting Kev, he told me about SonLight Power and the great work they do in places all over the world and especially in Honduras. He was notably impacted by his interactions with kids in the villages.

He told me the story of Fernando, a boy from one of the remote towns SonLight Power visited in the early 2000s. Against tremendous odds, Fernando worked hard in school and eventually studied architecture at the national university. Inspired by the camera Kevin used on trips, Fernando also became a skilled photographer.

What a turn of events when I got to meet Fernando in person while he served as a photographer on one of our trips in 2016! He was a young man then. His iconic photos from that trip have been featured for some time on the SonLight Power website.

I had also traveled to Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua with my church, but until I met Kevin, I had never been to the remote villages in Honduras where SonLight Power goes.

After Kev and I got to know each other, I was invited to serve on SonLight Power trips in the villages where families don’t have basic electricity. It really changed me and the way I thought about being the hands and feet of Jesus.

What happened next? How did you end up in Cincinnati?

Kev and I got married in 2009 in Tegucigalpa and lived there for our first two years together. I continued working with Tsebaoth Ministries producing their television programs and traveling around Central America with the church as a worship leader while helping Kev’s work with SonLight Power.

I had always pictured myself as a singer travelling the world and marrying a man who would become my manager. But God had a different plan – a better plan!

In 2011, we moved to the U.S., to Cincinnati, where Kevin had family. After moving to Cincinnati, Kevin was invited to join the SonLight Power board. Not long after that, he was offered the executive director role to grow what Allen Rainey had started.

When we moved to Cincinnati, we started attending Vineyard Cincinnati Church and VCC’s Hispanic church, then called La Viña. Services at La Viña were in Spanish and we were surrounded by people who, like me, came from Central America. I found it helpful to acclimate myself to Cincinnati by getting involved with the church.

When the La Viña pastor position opened, I felt the prompt of the Holy Spirit to apply and was offered the role to grow and lead their Spanish-speaking community.

I ended up working for VCC for 10 years, while at the same time, volunteering as co-leader on SonLight Power trips. My life was transformed again as I saw the need in those remote communities, and I fell in love with the kids we served.

Why SonLight Power? What does this new role mean to you?

SonLight Power has a very special place in my heart.

Through SonLight Power, I met my husband. Through SonLight Power, I’ve been able to fulfill the Great Commission for the last 15 years alongside my husband and our four kids – going to the unreached and forgotten people showing them in practical ways how much Jesus loves them, sees them, and cares for them.

Through SonLight Power I have led hundreds, perhaps thousands to Jesus while empowering many other leaders from churches and organizations around the country to do the same.

I love the mission of SonLight Power. I love co-missioning with my husband building God’s kingdom together.

I want to continue being a great ambassador for the mission, co-leading teams. Plus, I’m a native Spanish speaker, so that will help strengthen our partnership efforts in the places we serve.

Stepping into this new role means so much, especially as I embark on this new path the Lord has for me. It all goes back to taking that step of obedience. I could have been serving as a pastor at the Vineyard for another 10 or 20 years, but God showed me that I had accomplished all I could do there and it was time to move on.

I had raised other leaders, commissioned them, empowered them, and basically gave my job away. That was always my goal – to find the gems in others and bring them out and release them. I find a lot of joy doing that.

Working at SonLight Power feels surreal, but at the same time it doesn’t. I’ve walked a road with the Lord that has led me to where I am today. If I didn’t obey God’s promptings in the past, I wouldn’t be here right now.

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to serve God and share the Good News, but I thought I’d do that through music and speaking, going out and being with people. The Lord has fulfilled that, but in different ways than I had imagined.

We plan, but ultimately God has a dream for us and our purpose here on earth.

What do you love most about the SonLight Power mission?

I love how at SonLight Power, we keep the main thing the main thing.

Although we install solar power for communities and missions in need and are really good at that, solar power is just the vehicle to come and bring the hope and love we have in Jesus to those places that wouldn’t otherwise have it.

SonLight Power follows the will of God and goes to these places that need to hear about Jesus. Fear can keep us from doing the things the Lord wants us to do, but when you do it anyway, you see the hand of God upon you.

What are your hopes and dreams for SonLight Power?

I dream about continuing to be good stewards of what God has given us. So far, SonLight Power has impacted 20 countries with solar-powered ministry. If in 10 years, I can help establish stronger relationships and programs in those countries, that would be a huge win.

A big part of my role will be to connect and engage partners and volunteers with this amazing mission. I believe in embracing ambassadors of the mission to extend our reach. It would be amazing to say we have projects in 20 countries and we have SonLight Power ambassadors in those countries, too.

We’re seeking God for His guidance, wisdom, and provision to accomplish every dream he has given for this mission. We’re asking for his kingdom to be established. I want to continue bringing the light of Jesus to the places SonLight Power extends.
