Message from Kalonji Kadima:

During the summer of 2012, I was able to take the trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo and visit my family for the first time. Although I had heard and read about many of the daily difficulties many Congolese face, living the experience for two weeks only increased my desire to help the people of DR Congo wherever I could.
While I was in Congo, I was able to visit the Kalala Muzeu Health Clinic (KMHC) in Tshibombo Tshimuangi. Tshibombo Tshimuangi is a large refugee area in the Eastern Kasai Province near the city of Mbuji Mayi. Many of the families in the area have been living as refugees since the mid 1990s following political unrest in various parts of the Congo. As a result of the unrest, thousands of people were forced to return to their province of ancestral origin.
During the unrest, several members of the Congolese Diaspora living in the United States, including my parents, formed a group known as ‘Leja Bulela’, which in the Tshiluba language (spoken in the Kasai region of DR Congo) means ‘Show that you care’. Leja Bulela’s largest achievement has been the building and staffing of the Kalala Muzeu Health Clinic in Tshibombo Tshimuangi. It is undeniable that the KMHC is a blessing to the refugee population in the area. People now have a safe place to go for treatment against many illnesses that we take for granted in the U.S.: malaria, tape worms, etc. The clinic is also a safe place for women to give birth and to be kept under observation afterwards.
What the clinic lacks, however, is the electricity needed to provide refrigeration and lighting throughout the building. The rural setting of the clinic coupled with the lack of infrastructure in the area make solar energy the only solution. As such, Leja Bulela was thrilled when SonLight Power committed to the people of Tshibombo Tshimuangi in Congo! SonLight Power’s previous work speaks for itself and an installation of solar power at the clinic is nothing short of a miracle for the community!
With that as the backdrop, I am asking all of those who are able to help me reach my goal of $3,700 for this trip (Summer 2013). Every dollar will go a long way! I thank you for taking the time to read my page and I sincerely hope that you consider making a donation. All donations are tax deductible.

Respectfully,

Kalonji Kadima
