Message from Tania Kasongo (Leja Bulela):
I am planning on going to a Mission Trip to Democratic Republic of Congo. To build solar panels on a clinic there (Kalala Muzeu Health Clinic) and also assist with any other efforts in the region for the 10 days that I plan on being there. I'm also choosing to go on this trip with a group so that I know I will be safe and be able to communicate clearly with people back home.
By helping me reach my fundraising goal for this Sonlight Power mission trip (planned for July 2013), you will not only be helping me go to Congo, you will help millions of Congolese for many generations. The people in DR Congo deserve a clinic that has power all day, they deserve running water, better healthcare and a better life. This is a new and beautiful beginning for Congolese. Please help me reach this goal so that together we can build a better Congo.
Here is the breakdown of my fundraising goal:
Travel & Accommodations (includes flight, travel to clinic, lodging, Visa, travel vaccinations, misc. fees) - $3,700
Here's a back story about me and why this cause means SO much:
In April of 1989, my sister and I were hiding underneath my Grandma's bed in Zaire. We were hiding because that was the day that we were supposed to leave our life in Zaire and join our Dad in the United States.
I never thought that 24 years later, I still wouldn't be back to Zaire which had now changed its name to Democratic Republic of Congo. Or that, it would be the last time that I saw my beloved Grandma, Kayeba Kalenga.
What happened in our country after we left was appalling and very saddening. There was a coup d'etat and Mobutu was out, then Laurent Kabila took over and was assassinated then his son Joseph Kabila took over. During all this change, over 6 million Congolese have died, hundreds of thousands of women have been raped and millions more displaced.
Leja Bulela (LB) was founded to help the many displaced people in Congo. My uncle, Kalala Muzeu, was a pioneer of LB and encouraged many to be active in the organization. Unfortunately, he passed away on his way home to NYC on September 4, 1995 after an LB meeting. LB gave him the best commemoration by building a clinic in his name in Mbuji Mayi, DRC.
I have been part of the LB family all my life, but had not been as involved in the organization. After my grandmother passed away the day before my birthday on September 1, 2007 I made it my mission to do more for Congo so that no one would have to lose their life from something preventable. I have been active in various organizations raising awareness about Congo from Congo Action Network, Friends of the Congo and especially Leja Bulela. I'm now glad that the opportunity to go back to Congo with my colleagues of Leja Bulela on a mission trip to help install solar panels for the Kalala Muzeu Health Clinic is here.
Anything extra that is raised will go directly to support Leja Bulela and/or Sonlight Power.
Congo Strong!
Thank you in advance,
Tania
