Opportunity Honduras

The First Lady of Honduras, Mrs. Xiomara Castro De Zelaya recently invited SonLight Power to install solar power in nearly 400 Honduran schools with no access to electricity. "This is a tremendous opportunity for short term mission teams throughout America to make a substantial impact in the lives of the Honduran people," states Allen Rainey, Executive Director of SonLight Power, Inc.

These high impact events combined with SonLight Power's consistent presence in Honduras led to a cooperative agreement with the government's Healthy School Program. Mrs. Zelaya has placed her "full support for this endeavor" by minimizing import taxes and facilitating the customs process, and assisting with transportation and storage for SonLight Power's teams and equipment. "Thank you very much for your interest in improving and developing education in our country" the First Lady stated in a recent letter to Mr. Rainey.

Many schools are unable to take advantage of educational video tapes produced by the Honduran government due to their remote rural locations and lack of electricity. Many rural students have never seen a television program. After a successful school installation, Mr. Rainey recalled "I enjoyed watching the student's reactions when they first viewed a program about Africa. Most were wide-eyed with amazement after seeing elephants and lions for the first time. Some children started to run out of the classroom because they thought zebras might jump out of the television and chase them!"
