Sponsor a School

Bringing a stable and affordable source of electrical power to a school dramatically changes the educational program. Children in schools without electrical power rarely have the opportunity to continue education past the sixth grade due to a variety of reasons including lack of motivation and educational tools. Now education will be interesting and students will be motivated to continue educational pursuits. Some communities close schools during the day so families can use all available help in planting and harvesting crops needed for survival.

After dark, there is little opportunity for learning because the school house has no electricity. The result is that many of these children are getting very little education and will be destined to continue to live their lives struggling to survive.

With the addition of solar power, not only is adequate lighting for learning after dark available, so are a wide variety of other educational resources such as TVs, DVDs, CDs, and sound systems. One father of a young daughter told a SonLight Power team member "You have taken the machete out of my daughter's hand". What he is saying is that he now has hope for his daughter's life. With solar power to provide lighting, his daughter can get an education. With an education she can live a better life. Her life won't have to be spent toiling in the fields. "You have taken the machete out of my daughter's hand." It's no wonder there was a tear in his eye when he said that.

There are several ways to sponsor a school.

  • A one time donation of $3,500 covers all of the required equipment for most school projects.
  • Consider having a US based school sponsor a school in Honduras, Guatemala or Haiti.
  • Consider having your company or community sponsor a school in Honduras, Guatemala or Haiti.
